Pityriasis Alba, commonly known as P. Alba, is a mild skin condition often seen in children and young adults. It presents as light-colored, round or oval patches on the face, neck, arms, or upper body. The patches are usually dry and slightly scaly, and become more noticeable after sun exposure, as the surrounding skin tans while the affected areas remain lighter.

Causes

The exact cause of P. Alba is not fully understood, but it is often linked to:

  • Dry skin or eczema tendency
  • Sun exposure making pale patches more visible
  • Minor skin inflammation that heals with lighter pigmentation

Symptoms

  • Light-colored patches on the skin (hypopigmentation)
  • Slight scaling or dryness over the patches
  • More prominent in darker-skinned individuals or after tanning
  • Usually not itchy or painful

Treatment & Care

P. Alba is harmless and usually clears on its own over time. However, treatment can help improve skin appearance and reduce dryness:

  • Moisturizers and emollients to hydrate the skin
  • Mild steroid creams in cases with irritation or redness (under medical advice)
  • Sunscreen use to reduce contrast between affected and normal skin
  • Gentle skincare routines to avoid dryness and irritation

Prognosis

The condition is self-limiting and often disappears within months to a few years, without leaving permanent marks or scars.
